About The University:
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451. Famous alumni include scientist Lord Kelvin, economist Adam Smith and pioneer of TV John Logie Baird. The university is in the top 1% of universities in the world (THES Higher Education World Rankings 2009/10).

Glasgow is one of the largest universities in Scotland with around 1,500 students (16,500 undergraduate, 5,000 postgraduate).

Courses are taught through the following faculties:
  • Arts

  • Biomedical and Life Sciences

  • Education

  • Engineering

  • Information and Mathematical Sciences

  • Law, Business and Social Sciences

  • Medicine (including Dentistry and Nursing)

  • Physical Sciences

  • Veterinary Medicine.
In addition the university offers a range of Certificate and Diploma of Higher Education (CertHE and DipHE) and degree courses at the Dumfries campus in subjects such as Liberal Arts and Education with Primary Teaching.

Teaching and research quality are internationally recognised. The university is a founder member of Universitas 21, an international group of universities dedicated to setting worldwide standards for higher education.

You could spend part of your undergraduate course abroad through the European Erasmus programme as well as in other countries such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA.

Support for learning
The Student Learning Service has Effective Learning Advisers who organise study skills workshops and also give individual help to students.

The Disability Service can arrange pre-application visits and can provide a range of resources to meet students’ support needs once they are studying. The University has an ongoing programme for improving access across campus.

Access courses for adults and pupils
  • The University recognises Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) courses.

  • The Department of Adult and Continuing Education (DACE) runs part time access courses for adults – details available from DACE.

  • The University participates in Focus West, a programme of activities delivered in 29 secondary schools to support targeted pupils who may be thinking about applying to further and higher education.

  • Current Focus West projects include a Top Up programme: a 12 week mini higher education course designed to help S5/6 pupils who are either thinking about, or planning to enter, a higher education course.
Advanced entry
If you have a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) you can apply for entry, but you may have to start in Year 1.

Part time study
You can take a CertHE or a degree, by part time day study. Some courses also run in the evenings. Consult the website for details.

Find out more
There are open days usually in June and September. If you are offered a place, you will be invited to an Applicants’ visit day at the university in the spring, before you make your final decision. There is also a regular timetable of afternoon visits.

Did you know?
  • The University of Glasgow as a range of awards such as sports bursaries, organ and choral scholarships as well as 50 Talent scholarships of up to £1,000 a year to support new students facing financial hardship.

  • Four student journalists who write for the Glasgow University Guardian scooped awards (including Student Journalist of the Year) at the fourteenth annual Herald Student Press Awards in 2010.
